- Lot Description
Central Asia, Nepal, ca. 15th century CE. A beautiful hand-carved stone stele depicting the bodhisattva Manjushri. He is seated in the dhyanasana pose on a lotus base with a crested frame bearing a textured border, and wears flowing garments, two necklaces around his neck, elaborate earrings, and thin cuffs on each wrist. He presents with his lower hands holding arrows and a short bow, his raised hands holding a mace and a smaller depiction of seated figure, and a petite scroll or book in his hands clasped atop his lap. Downcast, almond-shaped eyes beneath thin brows, puffy cheeks, a slender nose, full lips, and a smooth forehead comprise his serene countenance, and an intricate, flower-adorned headdress tops his head. Traces of original red-pink, yellow, and white pigment are visible within some recessed areas and suggest this sculpture was painted with vivid pigment at one time. A fine figurative example from ancient Nepal! Size: 7.5" W x 9.25" H (19 cm x 23.5 cm).
Manjushri is known as a bodhisattva associated with transcendent wisdom (known as "prajna") in Mahayana Buddhism. Followers of Mahayana Buddhism believe that worshipping and following the teachings of Manjushri can confer upon them wisdom, increased memory, and heightened intelligence. In Tibetan / Vajrayana Buddhism, Manjushri is also known as a "Yidam," a physical manifestation of an enlightened mind or enlightenment. The name "Manjushri" translates as "Gentle Glory" in Sanskrit, and he is also known by his more-complete name - Manjushrikumarabhuta - which literally translated as "Manjushri, Still a Youth" or, less literally, "Prince Manjushri."

#149013Repaired from multiple pieces, with light restoration and small chips along some break lines. Losses to areas of top-right hand, nose, textured border, peripheries, and base of verso as shown. Minor nicks to limbs, body, head, peripheries, and verso, with softening to some finer details, and fading to original pigmentation. Nice earthen deposits throughout, and traces of original pigment visible in scattered areas.Condition
