Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, Majapahit Empire, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. A fine leaded bronze votive in the shape of a tiered stupa, cast in two separate pieces. The stupa model consists of a hollow circular foot with radiating lotus petals around the stem and nodule -pointed, tips - additional petals encircle the domed base. Layered discs tiers stacked atop one another, resembling a pagoda, and more flower petals adorn the circumference just below and above where the two pieces are conjoined. The top finial features what may be several figures around the base before the tubular stem gradually tapers upward. The configuration of this model stupa, and all stupas, symbolizes the five great elements of Buddhism: earth, water, fire, air, and sun. Additionally, the form of the stupa is also intended to echo the shape of the crowned Buddha sitting upon a throne. The hollow interior allowed for paper prayers to be inserted inside! Size: 2.25" W x 5.5" H (5.7 cm x 14 cm)
