Europe, France, Normandy (Rouen), Renaissance, ca. 1480. How exciting! A magnificently well preserved illuminated vellum page from the Book of Hours of Rouen depicting the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, a popular motif in western Europe between the 13th and 15th centuries, in which Christ or God the Father, sometimes accompanied by the Holy Trinity, saints, or, as in this case, angels, places a crown on the head of the Virgin Mary. This beautiful page features a golden perimeter embellished with intricate floral and acanthus ornaments of crimson, cobalt, periwinkle, and verdant shades of green surrounding an archway for one to peer in on the central narrative; a gray-bearded and haloed God the Father draped in shrouds of peach and blue sitting upon a medieval wooden throne as he holds a globus cruciger in one hand and blesses a kneeling Mary, dressed in her traditional rich blue hues and adorned with golden accents, with the other. Above Mary's youthful visage, two angels place a crown upon her bowing head. The image is accompanied with Latin angular letter-batarde script. Note the detailed architectural framework of the design, indicative of this manuscript dating to the early Renaissance. A gorgeous artifact from one of the most artistic periods in Western history. Size: 12" L x 1.5" W x 15" H (30.5 cm x 3.8 cm x 38.1 cm) with included custom frame.
The Book of Hours developed in the late medieval era and was essentially a prayer book created for individual patrons and illuminated with beautifully painted details and scenes depicting the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and various saints. The text of a Book of Hours usually included a calendar that delineated all the liturgical feast days as well as a series of prayers intended to be recited eight times per day. By the time of the early Renaissance, the Book of Hours was quite popular, due to the increase in text circulation and literacy with Guttenberg's invention of the printing press in the mid-fifteenth century, and indicating that the laity were growing more interested in communing directly with God and the saints rather than relying on the church and clergy to communicate with a higher power.
A very similar slightly larger page can be found at the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford (ID: c925c639-d580-4e87-9ed6-c23ce80a1626, Shelfmark: MS. Buchanan e. 3, Folio #: fol. 041v).
