Europe, Italy or Netherlands, Renaissance, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. An impressive brass relief plaque of rectangular form depicting the New Testament scene of Christ before Herod - a popular episode from the Passion of Christ, occurring after he is betrayed by Judas and arrested in Jerusalem, when he is sent to the court of Herod Antipas (referred to as King Herod in the Bible). In this Biblical scene, Christ is tried for making false claims of being a king and is, surprisingly, found innocent by Herod, despite the savior refusing to speak for the duration of the trial. Interestingly, Herod appears here as the center of the scene, rather than Christ who is nearly lost among a crowd of Roman centurions right of Herod's tiered throne. Draped in lavish robes, the diademed ruler sits upon a griffin-footed throne surrounded by a domed thermal curtain. To his left, five Roman guards present a slouching Jesus. Their strong armored bodies, equipped with helmets, swords, and lances, contrast with the savior's scantily-clad body and feeble demeanor. Size: 4.8" L x 2.9" W (12.2 cm x 7.4 cm)
One soldier turns his head toward Jesus and raises his right hand, pointing to Herod, asking Christ to speak to the ruler, while also bringing the viewer's attention to the main tension of the scene. Conversely, three chief priests, wearing long cloaks and tall headdresses, stand to Herod's right. They outstretch their arms, begging their case before the tetrarch. A pair of four-paned windows appearing like giant crosses flank the throne, perhaps foreshadowing the fate awaiting Christ and serving as strong reminders of the overall triumph of Christianity. Note the evident Renaissance artistic attributes throughout, such as linear striations on the floor - a tool for indicating spatial depth - and the theatrical curtains framing the piece - a classical motif inherited from the wall paintings of ancient Rome. Four petite drill holes present at the corners of the piece for attachment. The Lucite stand is for photography purposes only.
