East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A tranquil wooden sculpture of Guanyin depicted seated in dhyanasana and hands in the anjali mudra of salutation and offering. Draped in flowing robes in hues of scarlet and cobalt, the deity gazes downward, her ivory-toned skin imbuing her with an ethereal presentation as her serene visage presents a naturalistic nose and bowed lips. Elaborate necklaces fall across her chest, as twisted strands of hair cascade down her shoulders, the rest of her coiffure piled in a high top bun behind an intricate red diadem. A rectangular cavity in her back would have previously held offerings or prayers from her worshippers. Size: 13.1" L x 16.8" W x 36.1" H (33.3 cm x 42.7 cm x 91.7 cm); 41" H (104.1 cm) on included custom stand.
In Buddhist belief, Bodhisattvas are among the most compassionate beings in the universe, devoting themselves to saving the suffering and helping others achieve enlightenment and Buddhahood. In Chinese art from this time period and earlier, they are depicted as less austere than Buddhas, with graceful postures and elegant garments, a nod to the riches of the Northwestern Chinese Silk Road. This piece is no exception.
