According to a report on this piece from Striptwist Ltd., London, England (7 February 2019), "The bracelet type is well dated, and a Seljuk origin is most likely, but an Eastern European provenance is not impossible. The paired lions with a single head appear in Seljuk art from the early 13th century but probably derive from Western art forms and may be a highly stylised derivation from the ascension of Alexander iconography. The bracelet is said to have been found with a gilded silver plaque depicting the Virgin and Child." Note: The gilded silver Virgin and Child plaque is also included in this auction.
This piece will be accompanied by a digital copy of the Striptwist LTD report discussed above. This report also states that this bracelet was found with the gilded icon plaque of Mary and Jesus also featured in this auction.
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Madame Frances Artuner collection, Belgium, acquired in the 1960s
