Western Europe, ca. 13th to 14th century CE. A large and almost unwieldy iron sword from the time of the last Crusades, which ended around 1300 CE. The wide blade features a central fuller, a broad grip that once held a wooden or ivory covering, a rounded guard, and a large semi-crescent-shaped pommel. Of great interest is the maker's mark, stamped onto the midsection of the grip in the abstract form of a bearded face with deeply furrowed brows. Maker's marks were certainly not unheard of, but we cannot find this particular face in any of our reference materials. Size: 37" L x 6.5" W (94 cm x 16.5 cm)
Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private W.P. collection since the 1990s, acquired on the German art market
