Southeast Asia, Indonesia, East Java, Majapahit, ca. 13th to 18th century CE. A beautiful and large brass bell possibly for ceremonial use for elephants or cows to wear. The bell is cast with a distinctive upturned lip which mimics the architectural shapes of traditional Indonesian roofs. A rope like border is cast along the rim and the sides. On both faces is a yoni-shaped medallion with raised foliate patterns. The top of the dome is surmounted with a suspension loop. A wooden clapper is attached to the interior and the bell still emits a melodious low tone. Asian elephants were domesticated to serve as work animals for moving heavy loads, transportation, pulling wagons, and other tasks. They were ridden during ceremonies and festivals, and bells such as this example would adorn the elephants and announce their arrival. Size: 7" W x 6.5" H (17.8 cm x 16.5 cm)
