South Asia, India, Late Chola to Early Vijayanagar Periods, ca. 13th to 15th century CE. Finely carved in the round from grey granite, an elegant statue of Parvati - the Hindu goddess of fertility, love, and devotion. Parvati, also known as Uma, stands atop a lotus pedestal with ample bosom and her weight shifted to her right hip in a graceful curve. While her right hand rests beside her body, her left arm is bent at the elbow, raised to hold a lotus blossom. She wears a dhoti, sashes wrapped around her body, and an elaborate pointed crown with a palmette behind her head. Parvati is also bedecked with a beaded double-strand necklace and elegant earrings. She presents a curvaceous figure, and her arms are characteristically long and her hands and feet oversized. In contrast to this bold form, Parvati's visage is comprised of relatively delicate features - almond-shaped eyes framed by arched brows that lead to a slender nose, closed full lips, softly contoured cheeks, and a gently jutting chin. In addition to being a symbol of fruitfulness, love, and beauty,Parvati also symbolizes divine strength and power. Size: 17.5" H (44.4 cm); 19.25" H (48.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Parvati is traditionally understood as the consort of Shiva and is usually presented as a beautiful woman with no superfluous limbs, as we see in this example. At first Parvati, like most female deities (shakti), was viewed as a minor deity; however, between the 5th and 13th centuries, Parvati became a subject of worship in her own right rather than a mere consort to a male deity, with temples erected in her honor. It was at this time that Parvati became a major deity known as Durga and Kali. This sculpture depicts Parvati in all her glory.
