Western Europe, France, Medieval Period, ca. 13th century CE. Rare to find in any condition as these have almost all rusted away from exposure to the elements. Iron Spangenhelm "Nasal" helmet aptly named for the long iron nose covering that may have given some mental comfort but probably lacked in effectively protecting one's face from a hearty swing of a sword. Spangen refers to the metal strips that form the framework for the helmet and could be translated as braces, and -helm simply means helmet. The strips connect three to six steel or bronze plates. Made of an iron cage or basket to which iron plates were then riveted. This form was used by Saxons, Normans Vikings and others from the dark ages into medieval periods. Size: 6.5" L x 8" W x 10.1" H (16.5 cm x 20.3 cm x 25.7 cm); 15" H (38.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA; found by a metal detectorist near Lille, France in early 2011
