Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Chandler, Gila River Area, Hohokam people, ca. 12th to 14th century CE. This is a fascinating palette tool hand carved from a flattened piece of slate. The rectangular panel is incised on the obverse with a triangular motif, delineated from the working area with a shallow border groove. The Hohokam were gifted artists with lovely motifs painted on much of their pottery, using pigments that may have been held on palettes such as this. The true use of these palettes remains unclear, and some researchers have suggested that the slabs were used for the preparation of hallucinogenic plants. The verso has a handwritten find site information tag that reads: "Snaketown area (12 Mi. S.W. Chandler Ariz., Pinal Co., Near Gila R.) dug 1930s -40s by Claude Block of Phoenix from Hubert Guy 10/68." Size: 7.125" L x 0.25" W x 4.5" H (18.1 cm x 0.6 cm x 11.4 cm)
A similar palette dug by Claude Block and sold to Hubert Guy was listed in the Artifact Company, Mount Sterling, USA November 12th, 2011 catalog "Important Auction of Native American Artifacts," lot # 396.
Provenance: private South Carolina, USA collection; ex-Hubet Guy collection, Arizona, USA, aquired 1968
