East Asia, Korea, Koryo / Goryeo Dynasty, ca. 12th century CE. A beautiful Goryeo Dynasty celadon glazed pottery vessel of a characteristically simple yet elegant form comprised of a generally rounded body though with a just over one inch straight section just below the shoulder, leading to a gently tapering tubular neck, and a carinated mouth with an outfolded rim. The celadon glaze presents a gorgeous sage green hue with a lovely luster and mesmerizing brown craquelure throughout. Size: 4.5" in diameter x 7.125" H (11.4 cm x 18.1 cm)
According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Heilbrunn Timeline essay on Goryeo Celadon, "The term celadon is thought to derive from the name of the hero in a seventeenth-century French pastoral comedy. The color of the character Celadon's robe evoked, in the minds of Europeans, the distinctive green-glazed ceramics from China, where celadon originated. Some scholars object to such an arbitrary and romanticized Western nomenclature. Yet the ambiguity of the term celadon effectively captures the myriad hues of greens and blues of this ceramic type."
Provenance: Estate of William Stockton, Colorado, USA; acquired between July 20, 1966 and January 7, 1974 while Mr. Stockton was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. During this period he traveled primarily to Korea, but also to Japan, Vietnam, and other countries in Southeast Asia.

Condition
A minor old nick to the periphery of the base that probably occurred when the piece was removed from the kiln. The base is dark, probably resulting from iron rich deposits. Overall, this piece is in superb condition.
