Western Asia, eastern Persian (Iran) and western Afghanistan, probably made in Khorasan, Seljuk (Seljuq) period, ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A gorgeous hammered-brass bowl of large form with a flat circular base, a corseted body, and a flared rim surrounding the shallow basin. A wide border of animated Kufic script adorns the upper interior walls of this elegant vessel, with a series of light waved lines incised along the rim. The basin boasts a beautiful motif which includes a central flower encased by a braided ribbon pattern forming six concentric circle patterns that are then encompassed by a thick band with radiating tapered striations from triangular upper elements. Thick areas of patina imbue the bowl with an elegant presentation. A wonderful example of Seljuk visual culture! Size: 13" Diameter x 4" H (33 cm x 10.2 cm)

Restoration to one area of basin, with resurfacing along new material and break lines. Expected surface wear with shallow indentations, but form is apparent. Very light fading of some engraved details. Nice patina throughout with earthen deposits on interior. Otherwise excellent.
