Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, Majapahit Empire, ca. 12th to 14th century CE. A delightful bronze bell with a recumbent cow finial. The handle forms a lateral opening for suspension and at the top is the cow finial upon a rectangular pedestal - perhaps a representation of the deity Kamadhenu. The domed body is decorated with encircling bands and the rim curved slightly inward. The clapper within is hooked to an integral loop within the bell and still articulates. Bells such as this example would adorn the elephants and announce their arrival. Kamadhenu is regarded as the mother of all Hindu deities and thought to have the power to grant wishes to truth seekers. A wonderful example with the original clapper that still emits a nice loud tone! Size: 3.125" W x 5.75" H (7.9 cm x 14.6 cm)
