South Asia, India, Rajasthan, ca. 12th century CE. A beautiful sandstone sculpture of a dancing surasundari or divine beauty boasting a quixotic visage and voluptuous breasts as she twists at her torso as though dancing. Crowned by an elaborate coiffure of a coiled top bun and an arched headdress, the deity gazes outward from slender eyes beneath a sweeping brow; her seductive countenance displaying full cheeks and fleshy lips. Sizeable ears protrude from either side of her head, each decorated with heavy, beaded adornments, while a thick, collar necklace embellishes her clavicle and prayer beads or japamala fall between her breasts. The hand of another figure, perhaps her dance partner, is shown beneath one of her breasts. A sultry sculpture from medieval India! Size: 5.5" W x 7.3" H (14 cm x 18.5 cm); 9.5" H (24.1 cm) on included custom stand.
