- Lot Description
Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 12th to 14th century CE. A fantastic cast brass torso fragment of a Hindu god or Bodhisattva wearing lavish jewelry and crown. The details are remarkable on this figure, especially of the ornaments- these are continued on the verso, suggesting to be viewed from all angles and perhaps placed in the center of a room. The sumptuous adornments were based on what elite women and men at the Khmer court would have worn themselves. While this artwork was religious - it also enforced the power of the Khmer ruling class, and some scholars believe that gods and goddesses were portrayed with the features of individual members of the royal court. Size: 10" L x 5" W x 15" H (25.4 cm x 12.7 cm x 38.1 cm); 19" H (48.3 cm) on included custom stand.
