Central Asia, southern India, ca. 11th to 12th century CE. A gorgeously ornate grey sandstone torana, a Hindu temple carving. It has the form of a stupa gate, decorated with mythical creatures and their animal attendants set against two columns on each side. The center of the arch is decorated with the "wheel of law" or "Dharma Wheel" representing the cyclical nature of life. Standing at the base in front of the two interior columns are surasundaris, literally translated to "celestial beauty", young maidens in medieval Indian art who pose to demonstrate sensuality and feminine beauty and represent shakti, feminine cosmic energy. Behind them are two young men, one with his hands pressed together at his chest, the other holding a vessel. Above them are lions who are scaling the columns. Further figures perch atop the columns. Size: 6" L x 12.2" W x 18.75" H (15.2 cm x 31 cm x 47.6 cm); 19" H (48.3 cm) on included custom stand.
South Indian life during this time period was largely agrarian, with communities centered around granite temples covered in dramatic carvings of gods and saints. The torana is an ancient form still used today, a classic gateway full of symbolism in Hindu and Buddhist architecture. They are associated with stupas like the Great Stupa in Sanchi. Symbolic toranas can also be made of flowers, leaves, and other organic matter and hung over doorways, especially in southern India. They are believed to bring good fortune and signify auspicious and festive occasions.
