Central Asia, India, Jain, ca. 11th to 12th century CE. A fine effigy sculpture, hand-carved from dark-red sandstone, depicting a nude male figure standing atop an integral rectangular plinth. The depicted figure is known as a "tirthankara" (also called a "jina"), an enlightened lord of the Jain region who had conquered the cycle of death and rebirth under his own volition. Tirthankaras are also highly revered because they used their reincarnation as a type of spiritual lesson plan from which others could learn. The figure presents with a rigid posture and has delineated legs, rigid arms, slender shoulders, and a broad chest with a raised diamond centered on the sternum. Almond-shaped eyes with heavy lids, a narrow nose, thin lips, and elongated ears comprise his serene countenance, with a nodule-laden coiffure and a conical ushnisha above, all set beneath a tiered ornamental dome. An elegant spiritual figurative effigy from ancient India! Size: 3.75" W x 12.3" H (9.5 cm x 31.2 cm); 12.625" H (32.1 cm) on included custom stand.
