Western Asia, modern Iran, Persia, Nishapur, ca. 10th century CE. A spectacular wheel-thrown buffware pottery bowl with a squat foot and a hemispherical body that terminates in a thin rim. The interior is completely enveloped in a vibrant yellow ground that is topped with stacked green and red stripes outlined in black, and surrounded by a trio of peacocks and a standing woman with a rather concerned expression on her face. The woman wears an orange shirt crossed on the front with a yellow 'X' as well as a skirt adorned in several yellow and green spots and holds one arm to her waist while grasping a triangular object in the other. The peacocks to her sides exhibit a similar coloration to their feathers, and perhaps suggest that the woman is a keeper of a peacock aviary. The spaces around her are adorned with Persian-style bulbs, and the rim exterior boasts bi-chrome triangles and minimalist foliate motifs. Size: 7.125" W x 3" H (18.1 cm x 7.6 cm)
