South Asia, Central India, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. An exceptional sandstone relief depicting a rampant mythical creature known as a vyala or yali, featuring the body of a lion and a chimeric head, usually, as is here, a horned lion head. Depicted rearing upwards on one hind leg, the fierce beast displays a powerfully curved chest, bulging eyes, and bared teeth. A beaded collar encircles the neck, sitting just above a layered, stylized mane, as his tail curls between his legs, the end of which is a flame-like element indicating his ferocity. Originally part of the sculptural decoration of a Hindu temple in either northwest or central India, this vyala would have functioned as a guardian figure for the temple entrance and served as an element of protection. Size: 5.5" L x 10.8" W x 27.8" H (14 cm x 27.4 cm x 70.6 cm); 30.8" H (78.2 cm) on included custom stand.
These figures are the most common feature on Indian temple architecture and usually act as a bracket set into recesses on the exterior walls between figures of the gods, celestial couples and nymphs, and supporting an overhanging cornice. The lion is a solar symbol and also a sign of royalty and power and the vyala is an image of the force of nature. Though the vyala is sometimes also called a sardula, the sardula typically has the head of another creature, such as an elephant or tiger.
A similar, though slightly more petite (23" high), sandstone vyala hammered $23,750 (now equivalent to $28,798.29) at Christie's New York on September 24, 2020 (lot 969, live auction 19039 "Sacred and Imperial: The James and Marilynn Alsdorf Collection Part II").
