Near East / Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. Absolutely breathtaking, this 76.29% gold (equivalent to 18K+) and garnet earring boasts an exquisite design and is dripping with opulence! The orb-like form is comprised of an upper central rosette formed by curled gold bands to create the impression of petals around the central garnet cabochon which is housed in a nice gold bezel. Below this and comprising the majority of the form are two large leafy fronds also created from bands of gold, with central 'veins' and curled termini, flanking a pear-shaped garnet cabochon set in a gold bezel. The border presents with a beveled band followed by a sinuous ribbon-like band, and there are applied loops at the lower end where danglers were once suspended. Size: 1.31" L x 1.25" W (3.3 cm x 3.2 cm); total weight: 2.3 grams; metal composition includes 76.29% gold and 17% silver (equivalent to 18K+)

Condition
Small abrasion to pear shaped garnet. Losses to applied loops at lower end and missing danglers. Slight bending to form. At the upper end, the ear wire is frozen; however, a reputable jeweler could add a setting to make wearable, or as an alternative, one could wear it as a pendant. The gold has developed a beautiful warm patina.
