About the Artist:
Tenzing Rigdol, born in 1982 in Kathmandu, Nepal, is a prominent contemporary Tibetan artist whose work spans painting, sculpture, performance art, and installation. Known for his politically charged art, Rigdol explores Tibetan identiy, human conflict, and environmental issues. His most notable work, Our Land, Our People (2011), involved transporting soil from Tibet to Tibetans in exile in Dharamshala. Rigdol’s latest exhibition, Biography of a Thought (2024), at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, reimagines traditional Tibetan motifs to address global concerns like pollution and violence. His work has been widely exhibited, cementing his status as a leading voice in contemporary art.
This poignant artwork commemorates the early Tibetan exile history, specifically honoring the countless Tibetans who toiled as road builders, forging new paths in unfamiliar lands. Their labor, perseverance, and resilience in the face of adversity are testament to the unyielding Tibetan spirit.
