Ngawang Jorden - Free Tibet is Not Free
Acrylic on marine plywood
12 X 22 in
2024
This artwork poignantly conveys the profound sacrifices intrinsic to the Tibetan Freedom Movement —be they human lives, financial resources, or environmental impacts. Its front visually encapsulates these burdens, inviting viewers to deeply consider the tangible and intangible costs of justice.
On the reverse, a preserved 2008 *New York Times* full-page ad exemplifies the financial investments required for advocacy. Commissioned by Students for a Free Tibet (SFT), it called upon Olympic athletes to champion Tibetan freedom during the Beijing Olympics. This historical element serves as a testament to the nexus of activism, global events, and the substantial resources that fuel change.
The piece offers a dual narrative: the evocative artistry on the front and the impactful historic activism on the back. Whichever side is displayed, the work stands as a powerful reminder of resilience and the price of progress.
