Situs Partium Praecipuarum Totius Orbis Terrarum. Augustino Torniello (1543-1622). Etched world map. Milan, 1609. 7 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches sheet. First issue, of this lovely clear outline map after Ortelius’ world map of 1587. Published in Torniello’s Annales Sacri et Profani... Born Gregorio Torniello in Navarra, he originally planned to be a doctor, but instead took orders in 1569, and changed his name to Agostino. He wrote his Annales..., a general history of the world from Adam to the time of Christ, which was published first in 1609, and then again in 1610 with the general map embellished with extra-place names and putti in the spandrels.
