ca. 1100 AD. Seljuk. This intriguing medieval Islamic period glazed lamp was probably made under the Seljuk dynasty. The lamp has a globular body, projecting spout, and a curving handle with a thumb rest. The entire lamp is glazed a vibrant green and features impressed geometric decoration. The Seljuks were a Turkic dynasty who swept out of Central Asia in the early 10th century and conquered an enormous expanse, covering most or all of present-day Turkmenistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey and beyond. After inflicting crushing military defeats on a host of rivals, the most famous of which was perhaps that against the Byzantines at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, the Seljuk sultans became major patrons of art and architecture. This lamp is a beautiful example of Seljuk art and reminds the viewer of Medieval Islamic folklore surrounding genies entrapped in lamps. Excellent condition. Provenance: From an old British collection formed in the 1980s; Size: H:90mm / W:140mm ; 199g
