C. 1100 AD. Medieval Seljuk. Shallow bronze plate or dish with steep, short sides. The interior is covered in ornate incised geometric and pseudo-calligraphic decoration (decoration which mimics written scripts), including a central rondel and three registers of ornamentation around the edges. The Seljuks were a Turkic dynasty who swept out of Central Asia in the early 10th century and conquered an enormous expanse, covering most or all of present-day Turkmenistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey and beyond. After inflicting crushing military defeats on a host of rivals, the most famous of which was perhaps that against the Byzantines at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, the Seljuk sultans became major patrons of art and crafts. This vessel is testament to the technical skills of Seljuk craftsmen. Beautiful patina; excellent condition. Provenance: Property of a London gallery, previously in old British collection formed in the 1980s.. Size: H:50mm / W:380mm ; 1100g
