100 – 300 AD. Gandharan. Grey schist panel depicting a scene in the life of the Buddha and supporting the feet of standing buddha. On the rectangular panel itself, a seated buddha sits with a raised right hand, palm facing outwards and fingers held upwards while the left arm is held close to the body. This gesture, known as the Abhaya Mudra symbolises wisdom and fearlessness. He is flanked by standing and crouching worshippers. All of the individuals are carefully modelled with free-flowing robes and well-defined features and hair. They are framed by a lower orthogonal register and an upper garlanded register. The feet of the standing buddha survive to ankle height and are equally carefully executed, with clearly visible toenails still intact. The piece is flat at the back. Gandhara was an ancient region in the Peshawar basin in the north-west of the ancient Indian subcontinent. The Kushan period (c. 75-451 AD) of Gandharan art, to which this schist panel belongs, was the golden age of artistic production in the area. For further information on Gandharan art, see Jongeward, D. 2019, Buddhist Art Of Gandhara in the Ashmolean Museum. Oxford, Oxford University Press. Good condition; on a custom-made stand. Provenance: Property of an Oxfordshire art professional; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1980s on the UK / International art markets. Size: H:230mm / W:275mm (w/o stand); 7.6 kg
