• Lot Description
  Ca. 700 AD. Tang Dynasty or later. Circular bronze mirror with a carefully-executed relief of a phoenix (fenghuang) with outstretched wings and an elongated tail. This bird was a symbol of virtue and grace, and was often associated with weddings and royalty. The Tang dynasty ruled most of China between AD 618 and 907, and this period is widely viewed as an era of progress and stability, during which many scientific and artistic advances were made. This beautiful mirror may have belonged to a noble lady who lived under the Tang. Excellent condition. Size: H:10mm / W:170mm ; 697g, Provenance: Previously with R.U., Parthenon Gallery, London; formerly in the 1990s UK collection.
