600-400 BC. Northeast China. Cast bronze openwork fitting depicting a grazing doe in section; a far smaller stag sits on her back. Deer traditionally symbolise longevity and riches in Chinese culture, as they are believed to have very lengthy lives. The Ordos culture thrived during the Bronze and early Iron Ages in what is now Inner Mongolia, and is known for its nomadic culture and rich traditions of decorative metalwork, as is embodied in this piece.
