600-400 BC. Northeast China. Cast bronze openwork fitting depicting a standing doe with a mating stag behind her. A series of suspension loops protrude from the stag’s back, indicating this piece was perhaps originally worn as a pendant. Deer traditionally symbolise longevity and riches in Chinese culture, as they are believed to have very lengthy lives. The Ordos culture thrived during the Bronze and early Iron Ages in what is now Inner Mongolia and is known for its nomadic culture and rich traditions of decorative metalwork, as is embodied in this piece. Excellent condition. Provenance: Important London collection of Ancient art; formed in 1970-80s then passed by descent. Size: H:28.7mm / W:33.5mm ; 13.65g
