Ca. 1368-1644 AD. Chinese Ming Dynasty Attendant Figure. An elaborately crafted male attendant figure dressed in a light blue tunic, a dark blue overtunic which is belted with a light blue sash, and a tall dark-coloured hat. The attendant’s has a long blue object clutched to his chest. Attendant figures such as this item were important to a variety of cultures with afterlife beliefs which involved trials, travels, or an afterlife similar to that which was lived on earth. These figures, which are included as funerary offerings reflect the belief that assistance would be helpful in overcoming the difficult environs of the afterlife.
