C. 202 BC–220 AD. Han Dynasty. Terracotta vessel with ring base, globular body, tapering neck and flaring rim. The fabric of the vessel is a reddish-brown, and the exterior is glazed with a combination deep reddish-brown and yellowish green (around the middle of the body). Relief on the body decoration depicts a beast holding a ring in its mouth and is framed by two horizontal bands of incised lines. The Han Dynasty, which ruled between 202 BC–220 AD, brought great prosperity and stability to China, reigning over a golden age of classical Chinese civilisation during which China saw major advances including the widespread development of a monetary economy and the invention of paper, as well as much progress in the decorative arts.
