In 1847, he moved to Paris to open his first atelier specializing in fine quality French Kings style pieces. Sormani exhibited at the International Exhibitions in Paris in 1849, 1855, 1867, 1878 and 1900, and in London in 1862, winning numerous medals. Renowned as a maker of luxury furniture, he received commissions from the likes of Empress Eugenie, the wife of Emperor Napoleon III. When Paul Sormani died in 1877, his wife, Marie-Philippine, and his son, Paul-Charles, took over the business; from this date onwards, the firm's pieces were signed "Veuve Sormani & Fils." The firm closed in 1934.
Condition
Structurally sound. With an even medium red/brown color to timber. Mounts of good quality and even color and tone. Glass panels beveled. Interior with two glass shelves. Drawer lock stamped as stated. General marks, scratches, a few scattered nicked losses, rubbing and wear overall. Some spotting and darkening to some mounts. Veneer to base backboard and undertier cracking and lifting somewhat. One key.
