- Lot Description
.44 cal., 35 1/4'' octagon barrel with an oxidized bore. The barrel is an overall brown patina and was converted from flint by the drum and nipple method, with a small dent in the right flat above the bolster. There are some scattered dings, handling marks and spots of oxidation and pitting. There is a rather nice scant blade brass font sight with a flat-topped v-notch rear and the barrel is engraved ''S*L JG*U'' to the rear of the sight. The N. Ashmore lock has been cut along the top to fit the bolster probably at the time of conversion and is a brown and gray patina with scattered pitting and oxidation. The rifle is stocked in maple and is decorated with incised carved scroll starting at the left side of the butt and ending just before the cheekpiece. The barrel is retained by small tiny pins and the triggerguard has square extensions and the bow a single rearward facing spur. The buttplate has a facetted toeplate and tang with an ornate geometric comb plate, the patchbox release of iron in the center of the butt. The patchbox itself is very ornate and is engraved with a pierced head and the wingstyle sideplate engraved also. There is a nice crescent German silver cheeckpiece inlay above a rectangular brass inlay on the moulded edge along with an un-engraved German silver monogram plate atop the wrist. The stock rates about very good with a thin hairline crack along the right forend, a 9'' chip missing along the left forearm along with a thin crack in the left sideplate and a wider crack at the toe. There are three small thin holes in the left side of forearm along with expected light handling marks from the years, light hammer edge wear and perhaps a little added varnish. The hammer does not hold on cock and what appears to be a proper wooden ramrod is in place. A very good converted fullstock sporting rifle. (58909-26) {ANTIQUE}
