This rare Shiloh Sharps Hartford model was built for Tom Selleck for the motion picture "QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER" after which he donated it to the NRA in 2006. Serial number 8887. This Sharps rifle has a 34 octagonal barrel, globe front sight and Lawrence style ladder rear sight with a Sharps type vernier tang sight with a 4 staff. Right side of receiver is inlaid in gold with the initials "MQ" inside a fine gold wire oval. This rifle is engraved with fine foliate arabesque patterns on each end. The stock is figured, uncheckered American walnut with scalloped pewter forend tip and semi-crescent buttplate. Accompanied by a Shiloh Rifle Manufacturing Co. letter fully identifying this rifle, as found. The letter contains the statement that this rifle was one of three that were specifically built for the motion picture "Quigley Down Under" starring Tom Selleck as Mathew Quigley. It further states that the buttstock has extra length of pull for Mr. Selleck and that all three rifles were shipped to MGM Grand in Hollywood, CA in 1989. This is the same rifle that Mr. Selleck donated to the National Rifle Association for a fund raising raffle. It was won by Stephanie Lynn Leslie of Cedar City, Utah and had an approximate retail value of $102,000 at that time. A letter from Ventura Associatesthe promotion agency representing the NRA, confirming the affidavit from Ms. Leslie also accompanies the lot.A conversation with Mr. Selleck disclosed that he has disposed of all three of his rifles from the movie. This one raised several million dollars for the NRA, another was donated to a museum and the third one was sold to a private collector. During the conversation with Mr. Selleck he stated that his intention while portraying the role of Mathew Quigley was to have the rifle be the focal point, more so than the actors themselves. This firearm is in very, very good condition and the barrel retains 95% original blue with some thinning around receiver end. Receiver, lockplate, lever & trigger plate, patchbox & buttplate retain most of their original case colors. Wood is sound with minor nicks & scratches. The rifle is mechanically sound but has not been inspected internally.
