The Happy Hour by Gordon Snidow is perhaps the artist’s best known painting and unquestionably in the top tier of his works dealing with the contemporary cowboy. When it was first on view at the Phoenix Art Museum in the 1979 Cowboy Artists of America Exhibition, it was critiqued on October 28 in the Arizona Republic.
The real star of the Cowboy Artists Exhibition is Gordon Snidow. My candidate for the best work in the entire show would be Snidow’s The Happy Hour. This oil painting portrays a contemporary cowboy kneeling with a subtle smile on his face while he drinks a can of Coors beer. This painting alone should guarantee Snidow the nickname “Cowboy Caravaggio.” The Happy Hour is an excellent painting that should rest perfectly at home with the best contemporary photo-realism being produced today, because this painting is contemporary art, not an ersatz attempt at recreating the past. Snidow had this to say about his chosen subject matter in the book Cowboy Artist of America, published in 1988.
The world thinks the cowboy died along with the open range. When I did the Coors Cowboy Collectors Series, people would ask, “Where did you get your cowboys?” I would tell them, “There are real, living cowboys out there. Yes, living cowboys.” I try to portray them doing every common things, so common people don’t think they’re very important, but as time passes, they become an historical footnote...My mission is to create images based on contemporary life in an honest and straight forward way.Exhibited: Cowboy Artists of America Exhibition 1979, Phoenix Art Museum
