Artist: Frederic Mizen | 1888-1964
Title: Indian Family Scene
Signed l/l: Frederic Mizen 1956 Moose Horn - Montana
Medium: Oil on canvas on panel
Dimensions: 30 by 37 inches
To the unaided eye, the piece looks to be in very good condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals inpainting in a few areas. There is a small spot approximately 17 inches from the top and 5 inches down from the top and another small spot in the upper right, approximately 3 ½ inches down and 5 inches from the right. Other inpainting is visible in a line occurring in the braids of the young subject on the left, approximately 10 inches from the left and 4 inches from the bottom. The piece is framed in an ornate, antique gold frame which is in very good condition. Verso: Label: Gerald Peters Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Label: Douglas Billen Studio, Lakewood, Colorado. Label: previous Altermann Galleries label. Label: restoration notes from an unnamed conservator: "June 1989 Cleaned - not stripped and varnished with Liquitex Gloss Soluvar acrylic spirit varnish. Note: This painting is an overpaint of other work. The newer paint is not adhering well to the older work. Did some touch-up and fill on flaked spots. This painting would probably benefit from mounting to a solid support, i.e. Masonite, to reduce expansion and contraction." "June 20, 1989 Mounted on Masonite with Franklin Hide Glue and braced."
