Charles Marion Russell 1864 - 1926 | American Grizzly Bear
Inscribed base of bronze: CMR [Skull]; © HMcC 4 | Media: Bronze | Dimensions: 2 1/2 by 4 by 2 1/2 inches
Accompanying this offering is a description on the letterhead of James Graham and Sons Gallery, NYC, ca. 1960s, early seventies:
The original plaster model for this bronze was made by Russell ca. 1905, and was inherited by one of his descendants. The model was ultimately purchased by Dr. Harold McCracken, author of the book Charles M. Russell, and from this plaster there were cast nine bronzes copyrighted by Dr. Harold McCracken. In his opinion, this is one of the finest models ever made by any artist of the American Grizzly Bear.
McCracken was also author of The Biggest Bear on Earth (1943) and was the founding director of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming.
To the unaided eye, the piece looks to be in very good condition. There are no signs of repair to the bronze.
