Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz, commonly known as Witkacy (Polish, 1885-1939), "Portrait of a Man"-1933, pastel on paper laid down on artist's board, signed and dated with additional notations lower right including a "9" above "X" and "(T.C. Kat Co)". Expressionist avant-garde portrait depicting a young man with angled stylized green eyes, with brightly colored swaths of color on face and neck amid dynamic lines delineating his hair and surrounding energy. Framed approximately 26.5" x 21". Unframed approximately 23.3" x 17.3". Note: Around 1925, Witkacy established the Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz Portrait Painting Firm. By 1928, the artist had created types and rules for painting portraits outlining monetary charges, stylistic concerns, coding documenting his narcotics use during creation (see lower right of work, likely created while on cocaine), and other artistic and business issues.
Examined out of the frame with black light. Pastel on artist board comprised of many layers of paper, so this could possibly be described as a sheet "laid down" on artist's board. Surface apparently not sprayed with fixative resulting in minor fingerprinting and smudges to picture surface. Minor handling wear apparent to board corners. No apparent repairs or losses.
