William Trost Richards (American, 1833-1905), "Near Rowsley"-1897, watercolor on paper, signed and dated lower right "Wm T. Richards 97", verso of sheet pencil inscribed "Near Rowsley". Vertically-aligned watercolor painting depicting a figure walking on a bridge with rustic wooden fencing beside a green bank, presumably in Rowsley, Derbyshire, England with green trees, mountains in background. Framed approximately 13.75" x 12". Sheet size approximately 9.4" x.6.4".
Piece with mat burn from multiple previous mattings, most notably in upper quadrants and at left and right. Hinged at top with hinging tape. Adhesive with remnants of previously laid mat material spanning upper left margin. Losses spanning top margin, apparently from prior removal of adhesive. Overall fading and toning consistent with light exposure and age. Subtle foxing throughout. Scattered losses to edges, most notably at left and top edges. Some flaking of paint surface on left, right and bottom consistent with adhesive removal. Various staining and discoloration throughout verso.
