William Lewin (also spelled Lewyn) (English, 1747-1795), "Common Linnet", watercolor on paper, numbered upper right corner "83", unsigned. Framed approximately 20.6" x 17.6". Sheet size approximately 13.25" x 10.125". Within border 8.6" x 7.125". Note: This original ornithological watercolor by Lewin is from his "Birds of Great Britain". The artist and naturalist created only 60 sets of these unique original watercolors, tracing each image by hand and then painting them himself. The scarcity of these images and the skill apparent in each one makes the volume one of the most desirable of English books on birds. This superb first edition is distinguished from the second edition in which the plates are slightly smaller and are hand-colored engravings rather than original watercolors. In all, Lewin painted over 20,000 watercolors for the 60 sets.
