After Guido Reni (Italian, 1575-1642). "The Sleeping Christ Child", watercolor on paper, apparently unsigned. Very finely rendered early-mid 20th century painting depicting a sleeping putto or angel at center resting upon a laid down cross, the cross inscribed to endplate of crossbar "Cor' Meum Vigilat" from the Biblical passage of Song of Solomon 5:2, "I slept, but my heart was awake, when I heard my lover knocking and calling: 'Open to me, my treasure, my darling, my dove, my perfect one. My head is drenched with dew, my hair with the dampness of the night.'" The sleeping figure lies within a landscape setting with rocky soil to foreground, a rock outcropping behind at left with gnarly tree roots upon it, and a seaside landscape in background to right with cathedral set beside a body of water and mountains. Framed approximately 18" x 20", sheet size approximately 7.875" x 10".
