Southern French or Northern Italian, first half of 19th century. A two-drawer commode in the Directoire or Neoclassical style comprising an oblong molded top surmounting the two-drawer facade, each drawer decorated with three panels comprising two incised rectangular moldings centered by a square molding, each drawer hung with circular patinated backplates over the apron with central carved fluted decoration flanked by fluted columns terminating in tapered fluted legs. Approximate height 34.5", width 45", depth 23.5".
Commode is structurally sound and in overall good condition. Top has small moisture spots and slight scattered indentations and exhibits scattered worm holes (no longer active). Top and drawer façade also exhibit small holes indicative of prior worming commensurate with age. Long diagonal wood split running the length of top. All brasses intact but some ring supports are crooked due to age. Drawers exhibit slight gaps from wood shrinkage. Legs exhibit some wear commensurate with age.
