- Lot Description
Asian, probably Edo Period (Late 17th century). Blue underglaze porcelain lidded dresser box painted to the central roundel with the V.O.C. Dutch East India Company monogram within a flowering plants the border at the rim and base decorated with narrow bands of scrolls. The underside base also with VOC monogram. Height 2.5", diameter 4.5". NOTE: The initials VOC are those of the 'Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie', the Dutch East India Company, formed in 1602. Dishes with this monogram are naturally representative of East-West relations in ceramics and the role the company played in them, probably ordered for the use of the company staff at the factory on Deshima and also in Batavia and other factories in Asia.
Provenance: The consignor's mother began collecting Chinese antiquities back in the 1960's. The majority of her collection was acquired from her great paternal grandparents who were from the China city of Guangzhou, in the province of Guangdong.
