Chinese, late 19th/ early 20th century. A finely and intricately carved jade temple jar in three pieces, the round base on three ogee feet with dragon mask motif flanked by scaly dragon tail reticulated apron, the urn body of bulbous form with inner solid cylindrical cavity encapsulated by outer heavily pierced decoration reminiscent of a puzzle ball in form with many mythological creatures in parade including a phoenix, a qilin or Kylin, and a dragon approaching a fire surrounded yin yang pearl, the body's opposite side with a protruding figural dragon bust with snarling gaping jaws and scaled throat, the urn body topped by a band of leaf tips and scrolls in bas relief, the lid of graduated round form with two layers of stylized waves and scrolls at base surmounted by a figural dragon head spilling fire and smoke from its open mouth and serpent's tails surrounding the head. Unmarked. Overall approximate height 13.5", width across protruding mask 9", diameter of base 6.125".
