Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, 1720-1778). A collection of two etchings on laid paper from from Vedute di Roma (Views of Rome) comprising of "Veduta della Facciata di dietro della Basilica di S. Maria Maggiore (View of the façade at the back of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore)" and "Veduta del Campidoglio di fianco (View of Capitoline Hill)", originally published in the mid 18th century. Each etching depicting a view of an ancient Roman building with figures surrounding. Basilica etching framed approximately 21.5" x 29.75"; sight size approximately 19.5" x 27.5". Maria Maggiore framed approximately 21.625" x 31.25", sheet size approximately 19.875" x 29.875". Provenance: From the Estate of Sam & Florence Inman, Atlanta, Georgia.
Both etchings loose and not laid down. S. Maria Maggiore work: with toning to sheet, scattered foxing visible on front, light handling wear causing some rippling to sheet, verso of sheet with more uneven brown toning, no signs of rips, tears, or holes. Campidoglio work: toning to sheet, foxing visible on front, two large areas on verso of sheet with mold, two vertical fold lines, three small losses to bottom edge, no other signs of damage, loss or repair. We are uncertain as to which particular state each of these works are from, they appear to be 19th century works or earlier.
