Thomas H. Willis (American (Connecticut), 1850-1925). "Great Admiral, Boston", oil and mixed media collage on canvas, titled lower left and monogrammed lower right. Presented to Massachusetts Congressman William Stedman Greene (1841-1924) by the Master Pilot's Association of Fall River, painting depicts the clipper Great Admiral (Boston, 1869-1906) at sea with all sails, rigging, and deck details represented three dimensionally using silks and embroidered thread applied to surface of canvas, the ship at center flanked to right in background by a steam ship which is also enhanced three dimensionally, the two boats on the high seas under a sky just beginning to darken with storm clouds. Framed approximately 26" x 42.5", unframed approximately 19.875" x 36".
Painted areas stable without signs of lifting. Some losses to threaded textile at bottom of boats above water. Some light discoloration of textile elements commensurate with age. No signs of severe fading or incomplete elements. Scattered small losses and tears to sails, predominately in corners and on right side.
