English, 18th century. "The Death of General Montgomery in The Battle of Quebec, December 1775", hand colored engraving. Engraved by John Frederick Clemens after a painting by John Trumbull. Painting and engraving originally done for and gifted to Thomas Jefferson, with the original engraving residing in the Monticello Estate Museum. Inscribed below image lower left "Painted by John Trumbull Esq", lower right "Engraved by J.F. Clemens", and center "London, Published March 1798 by A.C. de Poggi, No. 91 New Bond Street", and below center "The Death of General Montgomery in The Attack of Quebec, Dec. 1775". Framed 36.5" x 44.5", unframed sight size 22.75" x 30.75".
Engraving has been laid down on artist's board. Work has been cut down to 22.4" x 30.5". Minor toning to sheet and scattered foxing spots. Some dirt and discoloration on edges likely from earlier handling. No signs of rips, tears or holes.
