Edward King (British, b.1863). "The Attentive Suitor", oil on canvas, signed lower right. Well painted figural courting scene depicting a young couple resting under a tree on a green lawn on a summer day, the female seated at right reading a book and wearing a long white flowered dress and hat tied under her chin, her male companion lying on his stomach at her left with head propped up on one bent arm as he watches her read, a pond at left with rowboat docked at the bank. Framed 26.8" x 36.75". Unframed 20" x 30". Label on verso from Ken Allen Art & Antiques, Hendersonville, North Carolina. Provenance: Acquired at Sotheby's, New York: Arcade "19th Century and Old Master Paintings", July 18, 1996, lot 456 whereby acquired by Mrs. Dorothy Edwards, Atlanta, Georgia.
Painting has been relined. Under black light examination, L shaped tear in grass to left of figures running approximately 2 inches horizontally and 1.5 inches vertically. Small scattered areas of additional in-painting including lower left corner (likely from rubbing on frame), area surrounding parasol handle, and two small areas in trees. Signature and figures not obscured. Scattered craquelure or alligatoring to paint, however, paint layer stable. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
