Chinese, Tang Dynasty (circa 618-907 AD), Polychrome pottery horse and rider figurine with female rider or equestrienne depicted sitting on a saddle with elbows bent and hands forward with opening designated to hold reins. Horse supporting figure standing on four legs on an rectangular integral base with head slightly turned to left and exposing teeth. Unmarked. Approximate height 15.5", width 12", depth 3.75". Provenance: Acquired by a Private Collection in Atlanta, Georgia while in China in 1995; placed in the care of the Michael C. Carlos Museum of Art, Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia from 1998 to 2013. Item accompanied with copy of appraisal from Paul E. Sternberg Sr. from January of 1996; a copy of the Thermoluminescence Authenticity Test ran on the item in 1995 which found the proximate age of the piece to be period--at the time 1380 years old based on a sampling off the underside of the horse's body, a copy of the deposit receipt from the Michael C. Carlos Museum of Art at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia for the item in 1998; a copy of the return receipt from the Michael C. Carlos Museum of Art at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia for the item in 2013; and a copy of the original debit note for the purchase of the antiques in 1995 by Coca Cola China Holdings Limited.
